Μεγαλοψυχια
Megalopsuchia
Noun, Feminine
Greatness of Soul / Magnanimity

Definition

From megas (great) and psuchē (soul). Greatness of soul, magnanimity, generosity of spirit. Though rare in biblical Greek, the concept pervades Scripture in descriptions of noble character.

Usage & Theological Significance

While this specific term is rare, the concept of greatness of soul characterizes many biblical heroes. Moses was called the meekest man on earth yet demonstrated extraordinary magnanimity toward those who opposed him. David spared Saul's life twice. Stephen prayed for his murderers. Jesus Himself demonstrated ultimate magnanimity: 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing' (Luke 23:34). True greatness of soul comes not from self-importance but from God-given grace.
