Μελισσα
Melissa
Noun, Feminine
Bee / Honeybee

Definition

The Greek word for bee or honeybee. While not directly used in the NT text, bees and their product (honey) are significant in biblical imagery, particularly in descriptions of the Promised Land and John the Baptist's diet.

Usage & Theological Significance

Bees represent both the sweetness of God's provision (honey) and the sting of divine judgment (Deuteronomy 1:44, where the Amorites chased Israel 'as bees do'). The Promised Land 'flowing with milk and honey' symbolizes abundant divine provision. Honey represents the sweetness of God's word (Psalm 119:103), while the bee's sting warns of the consequences of disobeying that word.
