Definition

From peri (around) and keimai (to lie). To be placed around, to be surrounded by, to wear. Used of the great cloud of witnesses surrounding believers.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews 12:1 declares that believers are 'surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.' This imagery of faithful saints from Hebrews 11 surrounding the present-day church is meant to inspire perseverance. We do not run the race alone.
