Definition

One of the most common Greek verbs, meaning to fall. Used of physical falling, spiritual falling, falling before God in worship, the fall of Jerusalem, and the fall of Babylon in Revelation.

Usage & Theological Significance

This word spans the entire range of human experience before God. People fell at Jesus' feet in worship (Matthew 2:11). Jesus warned that those who fall on the stone will be broken (Matthew 21:44). Stars fall from heaven in apocalyptic judgment (Revelation 6:13). Babylon the Great has 'fallen!' (Revelation 18:2). Paul asks: 'If they fall, will they never get up?' (Romans 11:11). In God's economy, falling can lead to worship, judgment, or restoration — depending on how one falls.
