Chokmot
Noun, feminine plural
Wisdoms/Wisdom Personified

Definition

The Hebrew word chokmot is the plural form of chokmah (wisdom). In Proverbs, this plural form appears to personify Wisdom as a majestic figure who cries out in public places, calling people to understanding. Some scholars call this the 'plural of majesty' or see it as representing wisdom in all its fullness.

Usage & Theological Significance

The personification of Wisdom in Proverbs 1 and 9 is one of the most remarkable theological concepts in the Old Testament. Chokmot cries out at the city gates — the seat of justice and commerce — offering life and understanding to all who will listen. This Wisdom figure is associated with creation (Proverbs 8:22-31) and is identified by New Testament theology with Christ Himself (1 Corinthians 1:24, Colossians 2:3). Lady Wisdom calling in the streets stands in stark contrast to the adulteress of Proverbs who also calls from the street — the choice between wisdom and folly is the choice between life and death.

Key Bible Verses

Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice.
Proverbs 9:1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars.
1 Corinthians 1:24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 8:1 Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice?
Colossians 2:3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
