Gabriel
GAY-bree-ul
proper noun
Hebrew Gavriʾel (H1403), “mighty man of God.” The angelic messenger who interpreted Daniel's visions, announced the conception of John the Baptist to Zacharias, and announced the conception of Christ to Mary.

📖 Biblical Definition

Gabriel is the angelic messenger entrusted with the most consequential birth-announcements in human history. He interprets Daniel’s vision of the ram and goat (Daniel 8:16) and then the seventy-weeks prophecy (9:21-27). He stands in the presence of God: "I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings" (Luke 1:19). He announces the conception of John the Baptist to Zacharias at the altar of incense in the temple (Luke 1:11-20). He announces the incarnation to Mary at Nazareth (Luke 1:26-38): "Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee". Gabriel is the announcing angel of the messianic plan.

📖 Key Scripture

Daniel 9:21"The man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation."

Luke 1:19"I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee."

Luke 1:30"Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Gabriel announces; Mary asks; the Lord acts. The pattern of revelation is fixed.

Luke 1 records two of Gabriel's announcements within a few months of each other: to Zacharias the priest in the temple, and to Mary the virgin in Nazareth. The two responses contrast sharply. Zacharias, an old priest who should have known better, asks whereby shall I know this? and is struck mute until John's birth. Mary, a teenage virgin, asks how shall this be, seeing I know not a man? — a question of mechanism, not unbelief — and Gabriel explains. The same angel; the same conversation; opposite outcomes.

The lesson is precise. Gabriel does not silence questions; he silences unbelief that masquerades as questions. Bring your honest how to God; He answers. Bring veiled disbelief, He may answer differently. And note: Gabriel stands in the presence of God (Luke 1:19). His credentials are heaven, not popularity. So is the gospel he announced.
