Godliness
/ˈɡɒd.li.nəs/
noun
Old English godlic — resembling God, divine; from god + -lic (like, resembling). Greek: eusebeia (G2150) — piety, devoutness, reverence; from eu (well) + sebomai (to worship, revere). The word pictures a life rightly ordered toward God in devotion and conduct.

📖 Biblical Definition

Godliness is the quality of life that flows from genuine reverence for God — a life shaped by the knowledge of God, expressed in devotion, obedience, and conduct that reflects His character. It is not mere religious performance (2 Tim. 3:5) but the inward reality of being rightly oriented toward God that produces outward transformation. Paul describes godliness as "profitable for all things" because it brings both present blessing and the promise of the life to come (1 Tim. 4:8). Godliness is the practical fruit of the new nature.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

GODLINESS, n. The state or quality of being godly; piety toward God; the character or conduct of one who walks in reverence and obedience before God; a careful observance of the laws of God and performance of religious duties proceeding from love and reverence for the Divine Being. "Godliness with contentment is great gain." 1 Timothy 6:6.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

In today's therapeutic and prosperity-oriented Christianity, "godliness" is often reduced to either emotional warmth toward God or outward religious compliance — neither of which is the biblical concept. The prosperity gospel hijacks godliness as a means of financial gain, turning Paul's words in 1 Timothy 6:5–6 on their head. Secular culture treats any form of godliness as moralism, repression, or self-denial gone wrong. True godliness, however, is not the enemy of joy — it is its deepest source.

2 Peter 1:3 — "His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness."
