Light (Biblical)
/laɪt/
noun
Hebrew or (אוֹר); Greek phōs (φῶς). Light in Scripture is the first created thing, the signature of God, the opposite of darkness, and the daily vocabulary for revelation, truth, and the presence of Christ.

📖 Biblical Definition

"Let there be light" (Gen 1:3) is God's first spoken word in the Bible. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). Christ is "the light of the world" (John 8:12); believers become "light in the Lord" (Eph 5:8); the Word is "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Ps 119:105). In the New Jerusalem there is no sun or moon because the glory of God is the light and the Lamb is its lamp (Rev 21:23). Light is not a metaphor God borrows; it is a property that originates in Him and radiates outward through creation, revelation, and redemption.

LIGHT, n. [Sax. leoht.] That which renders objects perceptible to the sight. In Scripture, light is the signature of God and the opposite of every darkness — physical, moral, spiritual. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." Christ is the true light that enlightens every man. The Church is the light of the world. The Word is the lamp to the Christian's feet. And the heavenly city needs no sun, for its light is the glory of God and the Lamb.

📖 Key Scripture

Genesis 1:3"And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light."

1 John 1:5"This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all."

John 8:12"Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.""

Matthew 5:14-16"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christians often dim their light to avoid social cost. Scripture commands the opposite: shine visibly in front of a watching world.

Jesus said "a city set on a hill cannot be hidden" and commanded disciples to let their light shine. Modern Western Christians often reverse the command: dim the light to avoid awkwardness, keep the faith private, avoid public identification. Scripture forbids the dimming: "No one after lighting a lamp puts it under a basket" (Matt 5:15). Your light is supposed to be visible. Your neighbors should know you are a Christian by how you live, pray, give, forgive, speak. Recover visible discipleship.
