The archangel named in Daniel (Dan 10:13, 21; 12:1), Jude (v. 9), and Revelation (12:7); identified as one of the chief princes who stands for the children of the people of Israel; the archangel who contended with the devil over the body of Moses and who in Revelation 12 leads the war against the dragon. His name itself is a question that answers the dragon's ambition: who is like God?
MI'CHAEL, n.
An archangel mentioned in scripture; in Daniel and Revelation, represented as the protector and champion of the people of God against satanic powers.
Daniel 10:13 — "Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me."
Daniel 12:1 — "At that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people."
Jude 1:9 — "Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee."
Revelation 12:7 — "There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon."
Modern Christianity dabbles in angel-prayers; Michael himself refused railing accusation and said only the Lord rebuke thee.
Jude 9 is one of the most instructive verses on spiritual warfare. The archangel Michael, contending with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to insult or directly rebuke the devil himself. He said, simply: the Lord rebuke thee. If the highest archangel will not bring a railing accusation against Satan, modern believers ought to think twice before adopting the swagger that some deliverance ministries cultivate.
Revelation 12:7-9 describes Michael leading the angelic war and casting the dragon out of heaven. The victory is real; the celebration is in heaven; the dragon was thrown down. But the loudest line of the chapter is verse 11: they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony. Even Michael's sword does not unseat the dragon for ordinary saints; the cross does. Stand in the cross. The Lord rebuke him.
