The first of the judges of Israel, nephew (and son-in-law) of Caleb. Judges 1:12-13 and 3:7-11 narrate his story. Othniel won Caleb's daughter Achsah by capturing Kiriath-sepher, and later, when Israel had served Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia for eight years, the Spirit of the LORD came upon Othniel, he went to war, and the LORD delivered the Mesopotamian king into his hand. And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died (Judg 3:11). Othniel is the prototype of the Judges-cycle: Israel sins, oppression follows, Israel cries to the LORD, the LORD raises up a deliverer, the deliverer subdues the enemy, the land has rest until the deliverer dies and the cycle begins again. Othniel is notably the only judge presented without significant character-flaw — subsequent judges (Ehud, Gideon, Jephthah, Samson) all have substantial moral complications. Othniel stands at the head of the line as the simplest, cleanest model of Spirit-empowered deliverance.
Othniel — the first judge of Israel; conqueror of Kirjath-sepher.
Othniel earned Caleb's daughter Achsah by capturing Kirjath-sepher (Joshua 15:16–19). When Israel later fell into idolatry and was sold into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim, the Spirit of the LORD came upon Othniel and he delivered them, beginning the cycle of judges.
Judges 3:9 — "The LORD raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel... even Othniel."
Judges 3:10 — "And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel."
Judges 3:11 — "And the land had rest forty years."
Joshua 15:17 — "And Othniel the son of Kenaz... took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife."
Overlooked entirely; the prototype of Spirit-empowered deliverance forgotten.
