John 21:15-19 records one of the most pastorally healing scenes in the Gospels. After breakfast on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, the risen Christ took Peter aside. Three times He asked: Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Three times Peter answered yes. Three times Christ commissioned him: feed my lambs; feed my sheep; feed my sheep. The three questions matched the three denials; the three commissions matched the three calls (Mark 1:17; 3:16; Luke 5:10). Then Christ predicted Peter's death by martyrdom, and concluded: follow me.
RESTORATION OF, n.
A scriptural event; Christ's post-resurrection restoration of Peter.
John 21:15 — "Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs."
John 21:17 — "He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?... Feed my sheep."
John 21:18 — "When thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not."
John 21:19 — "Follow me."
Modern Christianity often retires fallen leaders; Christ restored Peter and gave him the church.
Modern Christianity often retires fallen leaders permanently. The fall is treated as terminal; the restoration is incomplete; the calling is forfeited. John 21 disagrees. Peter's denial was as public as it gets, and his restoration was equally specific: three questions for three denials, three commissions for three falls. Christ then made him the chief shepherd of the early church.
The pattern is not blanket; not every fall is restorable in the same way. But the principle stands: the Lord is in the restoration business. He restored Peter; He restores you. Receive the three questions: lovest thou me? Receive the three commissions: feed my lambs. The work is not over because of the fall; the call is renewed at the breakfast fire.
