Reverence
/ˈrev-rən(t)s, ˈre-və-/
noun / verb
From Latin reverentia (awe, respect, veneration), from revereri (to stand in awe of, respect greatly) — re- (again, back) + vereri (to be in awe of, fear); a deep, settled honor and awe before what is supremely worthy

📖 Biblical Definition

Reverence is the outward expression and inner posture of awe, honor, and holy fear before God and, derivatively, before those He has placed in positions of dignity. It is closely related to the fear of God but emphasizes the responsive, deferential, and worshipful dimension — approaching God with appropriate weight, gravity, and holy care. Hebrews 12:28–29 commands worship "with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." The reverent person does not treat sacred things casually. Reverence also flows horizontally: wives to husbands (Eph 5:33), children to parents (Lev 19:3), all believers to one another (Eph 5:21), and all toward God's sanctuary and worship (Lev 19:30). A culture of irreverence — in worship, in speech, in relationships — is a symptom of the loss of the fear of God.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

REVERENCE, n. Fear mingled with respect and esteem; veneration. The reverence of God is a mixture of fear, respect, and gratitude for his mercies; a feeling excited by the dignity, perfections, and authority of God. We feel reverence for great men. "Reverence my sanctuary." — Leviticus 19:30. To show reverence is to bow, to prostrate, to uncover the head, to bow the knee.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modernity has declared war on reverence — treating solemnity as pretension, formality as hypocrisy, and awe as weakness. Casual Christianity presents God as a buddy, church as entertainment, and sacred things as personal preferences. The collapse of reverence in worship mirrors the collapse of reverence in society: no respect for elders, no honor for the sacred, no weight given to oaths or vows. "Come as you are" is true of salvation — but it was never meant to mean "stay as you are" or "treat God as casually as a peer."
