The "session of Christ" is the technical doctrinal name for the seated reign of the risen, ascended Lord at the right hand of God. "This man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God" (Hebrews 10:12; cf. 1:3; Mark 16:19; Acts 2:33; Ephesians 1:20-22). The posture is unprecedented for a priest — Old-Covenant priests stood daily (Hebrews 10:11), because their work was never finished. Christ’s sitting declares three things at once: the sacrifice complete (the Priest sits), the King enthroned (the throne is His), and the Father’s pleasure secured (the right hand of glory). He reigns now. He is not waiting to begin reigning at His return; He reigns until every enemy is under His feet.
SESSION, n. The act of sitting, or state of being seated; the sitting of Christ at the right hand of the Father.
1. The act of sitting; the actual sitting of a person on a seat or throne. 2. In theology, the present state of Christ as seated at the right hand of the Father, exercising kingly rule and priestly intercession on behalf of His church.
Hebrews 1:3 — "…when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"
Hebrews 10:12 — "But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;"
Psalm 110:1 — "The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool."
Ephesians 1:20 — "Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,"
Imagined as passive rest rather than active reign and ongoing intercession.
Pop devotion pictures Jesus “up there” waiting—a benevolent absentee. Liberalism reduces Him to memory and influence. Both miss what Hebrews shouts: He sat down, and from that throne He rules and pleads.
The session is not retirement. It is the active reign of the slain Lamb, the unceasing intercession of the great High Priest, and the certain pledge that every enemy will yet become a footstool. We do not wait for a powerless Christ; we serve a seated King.
