Worthy
/ˈwɜːr·ði/
adjective
From Old English weorthig — having worth, of sufficient value; related to weorth (worth, value, honor). Greek: axios (ἄξιος) — of equal weight, deserving, corresponding in value. Hebrew: kabod-related concepts of weight and glory tied to deserving honor.

📖 Biblical Definition

Having sufficient value, merit, or standing to receive honor, trust, or a position. In Scripture, "worthy" functions in two crucial directions. First, only God and the Lamb are declared inherently worthy — Revelation's great doxologies cry "Worthy is the Lamb!" (Rev. 5:12) as the ultimate declaration of Christ's incomparable merit. Second, believers are called to live worthy — worthy of the calling received (Eph. 4:1), worthy of the gospel (Phil. 1:27). This is not earning salvation but living in correspondence with the grace already given. The walking-worthy life is one of active, grateful alignment with who God has declared us to be in Christ.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

WOR'THY, a. 1. Deserving; having worth or excellence; possessing merit. A worthy man. 2. Suitable; having qualities adapted to the occasion. A punishment worthy of the crime. 3. Deserving of; meriting. Worthy of praise. n. A man of eminent worth; one distinguished for noble qualities. "The worthies of the world." — Dryden.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

The therapeutic culture has weaponized "worthy" into a self-esteem declaration — "you are worthy of love" as affirmation regardless of character or conduct. While there is truth that human dignity is inherent (imago Dei), the therapeutic version strips worthiness of its moral content entirely. One is "worthy" simply by existing, regardless of behavior or virtue. Meanwhile, the same culture demolishes the worthiness of God — reducing Him to a life-coach who exists to validate human choices. The biblical balance is lost: man has profound dignity as image-bearer; God alone has ultimate, inherent worth. Both truths must stand together.
