Carnal
/ ˈkär-nəl /
adjective
From Latin carnalis — of the flesh; from caro, carnis (flesh). Greek: sarkikos (σαρκικός) — fleshly, belonging to the realm of fallen human nature rather than the Spirit.

📖 Biblical Definition

Carnal describes the disposition, desires, and actions of the unregenerate nature — the fallen self that is hostile to God and oriented toward the appetites of the flesh. In Paul's theology, the carnal mind cannot submit to God's law because it is enmity against Him. A carnal Christian is one who, though regenerate, still walks according to fleshly impulses rather than the Spirit. Carnality is not merely physical but encompasses any orientation of life that displaces God from the center and enthrones self.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

CARNAL, a. 1. Pertaining to flesh; fleshly; sensual; opposed to spiritual; as carnal pleasure. 2. Being in the natural state; unregenerate; as the carnal man. 3. Pertaining to the ceremonial law; as carnal ordinances. CARNAL, in a legal sense, denotes actual and complete, not merely intended.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern culture celebrates carnality as authenticity — "following your desires" is framed as self-actualization and personal freedom. The therapeutic framework has repackaged carnal living as "self-care," "body positivity," and "living your truth." The very concept of a sinful nature requiring mortification is dismissed as repressive religious shame. A culture without the category of the carnal has no framework for understanding why unrestricted desire leads not to freedom but to bondage.

1 Corinthians 3:3 — "For you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?"

Galatians 5:19–21 — "Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality…"

Colossians 3:5 — "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."
