Jehovah-Shammah
ji-HOH-vuh SHAH-mah
proper noun (divine name)
Hebrew YHWH-Shammah (H3068 + H8033), “the Lord is there.” The closing-line name Ezekiel gives the future restored city in his temple vision (Ezek 48:35).

📖 Biblical Definition

Jehovah-Shammah (יְהוָה שָׁמָּה) — "the LORD is there" — is the eschatological covenant name given by Ezekiel as the new name of the restored Jerusalem in the closing verse of his prophecy: "It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there" (Ezekiel 48:35). The name climaxes Ezekiel’s vision of the restored temple, the river flowing from beneath the threshold, and the renewed land. It points beyond physical Jerusalem to the New Jerusalem of Revelation 21-22, where God Himself is the temple (21:22) and dwells with His people forever: "the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God" (21:3).

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern eschatology flees the new earth for a vague heaven; Jehovah-Shammah is a city.

Ezekiel's prophecy ends not in disembodied heaven but in a renamed city: The Lord Is There. The book of Revelation completes the picture — a New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven, gold streets, twelve gates, the river of life, the tree of life, and the Lamb on the throne. Christianity's hope is not escape from materiality; it is materiality made permanent in the presence of God.

Modern eschatology often blurs this. Hymns about leaving earth, songs about flying away, sermons about a vague spiritual hereafter — all softer than what Scripture promises. Jehovah-Shammah is a place, with an address, with neighbors, with work to do, with the Lord Himself as the consuming joy and the visible center. The Lord is there. That is where you are headed if you are His.
