The shadow side of Christ's discipleship paradox in Matthew 16:25 (and parallels): whosoever will save his life shall lose it; and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. The Greek sozo (to save) here means to preserve, to clutch. The man who clutches this present life so tightly that he refuses to surrender it for Christ ends up losing both this life and the life eternal. The reverse is also true: the man who surrenders this life for Christ's sake finds it preserved unto eternity.
SAVE YOUR LIFE, n.
A scriptural teaching of Christ; the warning paired with the promise.
Matthew 16:25 — "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it."
Mark 8:36 — "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?"
Luke 17:33 — "Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it."
John 12:25 — "He that loveth his life shall lose it."
Modern Christianity preaches life-preservation strategies; Christ said the strategy guarantees loss.
The most counter-intuitive part of Christ's teaching is that the strategies most people pursue to preserve their lives guarantee loss. Hoarding, self-protection, status-grasping, security-buying — the very strategies of life-preservation are the strategies of life-loss in the kingdom economy. Whoever will save his life shall lose it.
Modern Christianity often preaches life-preservation strategies under the gospel veneer. Pray this prayer to secure heaven. Tithe to secure blessing. Vote rightly to secure culture. Christ's teaching is sharper. Surrender life. Spend it. Lose it for His sake. The Lord preserves what is given to Him; the rest is forfeited regardless of the saver's intent.
