The Greek sozo (to save) here means to preserve, to clutch. The man who clutches this present life so tightly that he refuses to surrender it for Christ ends up losing both this life and the life eternal. The reverse is also true: the man who surrenders this life for Christ's sake finds it preserved unto eternity.
